Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 My God, whom I praise,

do not remain silent,

2 for people who are wicked and deceitful

have opened their mouths against me;

they have spoken against me with lying tongues.

3 With words of hatred they surround me;

they attack me without cause.

4 In return for my friendship they accuse me,

but I am a man of prayer.

5 They repay me evil for good,

and hatred for my friendship.

6 Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;

let an accuser stand at his right hand.

7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty,

and may his prayers condemn him.

8 May his days be few;

may another take his place of leadership.

9 May his children be fatherless

and his wife a widow.

10 May his children be wandering beggars;

# may they be drivenfrom their ruined homes.

11 May a creditor seize all he has;

may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.

12 May no one extend kindness to him

or take pity on his fatherless children.

13 May his descendants be cut off,

their names blotted out from the next generation.

14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before theLord;

may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.

15 May their sins always remain before theLord,

that he may blot out their name from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,

but hounded to death the poor

and the needy and the brokenhearted.

17 He loved to pronounce a curse—

may it come back on him.

He found no pleasure in blessing—

may it be far from him.

18 He wore cursing as his garment;

it entered into his body like water,

into his bones like oil.

19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,

like a belt tied forever around him.

20 May this be theLord’s payment to my accusers,

to those who speak evil of me.

21 But you, SovereignLord,

help me for your name’s sake;

out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

22 For I am poor and needy,

and my heart is wounded within me.

23 I fade away like an evening shadow;

I am shaken off like a locust.

24 My knees give way from fasting;

my body is thin and gaunt.

25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers;

when they see me, they shake their heads.

26 Help me,Lordmy God;

save me according to your unfailing love.

27 Let them know that it is your hand,

that you,Lord, have done it.

28 While they curse, may you bless;

may those who attack me be put to shame,

but may your servant rejoice.

29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace

and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol theLord;

in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him.

31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy,

to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

Psalm 110

Of David. A psalm.

1 TheLordsays to my lord:

“Sit at my right hand

until I make your enemies

a footstool for your feet.”

2 TheLordwill extend your mighty scepter from Zion, saying,

“Rule in the midst of your enemies!”

3 Your troops will be willing

on your day of battle.

Arrayed in holy splendor,

your young men will come to you

# like dew from the morning’s womb.

4 TheLordhas sworn

and will not change his mind:

“You are a priest forever,

in the order of Melchizedek.”

5 The Lord is at your right hand;

he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.

6 He will judge the nations, heaping up the dead

and crushing the rulers of the whole earth.

7 He will drink from a brook along the way,

and so he will lift his head high.

all his precepts are trustworthy.

8 They are established for ever and ever,

enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.

9 He provided redemption for his people;

Psalm 114

1 When Israel came out of Egypt,

Jacob from a people of foreign tongue,

2 Judah became God’s sanctuary,

Israel his dominion.

3 The sea looked and fled,

the Jordan turned back;

4 the mountains leaped like rams,

the hills like lambs.

5 Why was it, sea, that you fled?

Why, Jordan, did you turn back?

6 Why, mountains, did you leap like rams,

you hills, like lambs?

7 Tremble, earth, at the presence of the Lord,

at the presence of the God of Jacob,

8 who turned the rock into a pool,

the hard rock into springs of water.

Psalm 115

1 Not to us,Lord, not to us

but to your name be the glory,

because of your love and faithfulness.

2 Why do the nations say,

“Where is their God?”

3 Our God is in heaven;

he does whatever pleases him.

4 But their idols are silver and gold,

made by human hands.

5 They have mouths, but cannot speak,

eyes, but cannot see.

6 They have ears, but cannot hear,

noses, but cannot smell.

7 They have hands, but cannot feel,

feet, but cannot walk,

nor can they utter a sound with their throats.

8 Those who make them will be like them,

and so will all who trust in them.

9 All you Israelites, trust in theLord—

he is their help and shield.

10 House of Aaron, trust in theLord—

he is their help and shield.

11 You who fear him, trust in theLord—

he is their help and shield.

12 TheLordremembers us and will bless us:

He will bless his people Israel,

he will bless the house of Aaron,

13 he will bless those who fear theLord—

small and great alike.

14 May theLordcause you to flourish,

both you and your children.

15 May you be blessed by theLord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

16 The highest heavens belong to theLord,

but the earth he has given to mankind.

17 It is not the dead who praise theLord,

those who go down to the place of silence;

18 it is we who extol theLord,

both now and forevermore.

# Praise theLord.

Psalm 116

1 I love theLord, for he heard my voice;

he heard my cry for mercy.

2 Because he turned his ear to me,

I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The cords of death entangled me,

the anguish of the grave came over me;

I was overcome by distress and sorrow.

4 Then I called on the name of theLord:

“Lord, save me!”

5 TheLordis gracious and righteous;

our God is full of compassion.

6 TheLordprotects the unwary;

when I was brought low, he saved me.

7 Return to your rest, my soul,

for theLordhas been good to you.

8 For you,Lord, have delivered me from death,

my eyes from tears,

my feet from stumbling,

9 that I may walk before theLord

in the land of the living.

10 I trusted in theLordwhen I said,

“I am greatly afflicted”;

11 in my alarm I said,

“Everyone is a liar.”

12 What shall I return to theLord

for all his goodness to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation

and call on the name of theLord.

14 I will fulfill my vows to theLord

in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of theLord

is the death of his faithful servants.

16 Truly I am your servant,Lord;

I serve you just as my mother did;

you have freed me from my chains.

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you

and call on the name of theLord.

18 I will fulfill my vows to theLord

in the presence of all his people,

19 in the courts of the house of theLord—

in your midst, Jerusalem.

# Praise theLord.

Psalm 118

1 Give thanks to theLord, for he is good;

his love endures forever.

2 Let Israel say:

“His love endures forever.”

3 Let the house of Aaron say:

“His love endures forever.”

4 Let those who fear theLordsay:

“His love endures forever.”

5 When hard pressed, I cried to theLord;

he brought me into a spacious place.

6 TheLordis with me; I will not be afraid.

What can mere mortals do to me?

7 TheLordis with me; he is my helper.

I look in triumph on my enemies.

8 It is better to take refuge in theLord

than to trust in humans.

9 It is better to take refuge in theLord

than to trust in princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me,

but in the name of theLordI cut them down.

11 They surrounded me on every side,

but in the name of theLordI cut them down.

12 They swarmed around me like bees,

but they were consumed as quickly as burning thorns;

in the name of theLordI cut them down.

13 I was pushed back and about to fall,

but theLordhelped me.

14 TheLordis my strength and my defense;

he has become my salvation.

15 Shouts of joy and victory

resound in the tents of the righteous:

“TheLord’s right hand has done mighty things!

16 TheLord’s right hand is lifted high;

theLord’s right hand has done mighty things!”

17 I will not die but live,

and will proclaim what theLordhas done.

18 TheLordhas chastened me severely,

but he has not given me over to death.

19 Open for me the gates of the righteous;

I will enter and give thanks to theLord.

20 This is the gate of theLord

through which the righteous may enter.

21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;

you have become my salvation.

22 The stone the builders rejected

has become the cornerstone;

23 theLordhas done this,

and it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 TheLordhas done it this very day;

let us rejoice today and be glad.

25 Lord, save us!

Lord, grant us success!

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of theLord.

# From the house of theLordwe bless you.

27 TheLordis God,

and he has made his light shine on us.

With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession

# upto the horns of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will praise you;

you are my God, and I will exalt you.

29 Give thanks to theLord, for he is good;

his love endures forever.
